Makaton

In our school, Makaton is embedded into all aspects of the curriculum. We use Makaton every day in all year groups to develop children’s communication and language skills. Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life. With Makaton, signs and symbols are used with speech to learn new words and phrases. This helps provide extra clues about what someone is saying. Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear. Using symbols can help people who have limited speech and those who cannot yet sign. Makaton symbols and signs are taught alongside new vocabulary. They provide a visual representation of language which increases understanding and makes expressive communication easier.

Please see the document below entitled, ‘Makaton Signs to Use at Home’, for daily signs that you can use with your child.
