Remote Learning – Reading
Our pupils have been working very hard on their reading during their remote learning. Our school daily reading offer for remote learning includes:
-
Independently reading a book on one of our online reading apps (Bug Club / Speed Readers / Lexia / Oxford Owl). Pupils are expected to read at least 1 book a day.
-
A phonics lesson video for EYFS/KS1 which focuses on learning a new speed sound each day.
-
A guided reading task to develop key skills such as inference, fluency and comprehension.
-
A shared read / story time at the end of each day.
Pupils also have access to a variety of online reading apps whilst working remotely:
-
Bug Club (all year groups) – Pupils are assigned books set to their ability by their teacher. They will read the book and are then prompted to answer questions or complete a quiz at the end.
-
Oxford Owl (all year groups) – Pupils will have to sign up to create their own login on the Oxford Owl website. This then provides access to a wide range of eBooks and activities.
-
Speed Readers (Years 3-6) – This is a fantastic resource that improves pupils’ reading fluency and pace. These are important skills that they will need to develop in Key Stage 2.
-
Lexia (selected pupils from Years 2-6) – This is an online reading intervention programme that helps children to practise and develop key reading skills. The app will assess which level the pupils is working at and then tailor the programme to their individual needs.
