Year 2 has many exciting topics in store for the children and begins to build on and embed skills learnt in Year One in order to develop a wider understanding so children can confidently apply their previous knowledge.
During Autumn Term, we will be stomping with the dinosaurs in our ‘Earth Shakers’ topic. Children will apply and develop their knowledge of herbivores, carnivores and omnivores from Year One. They will explore many popular dinosaur stories such as ‘The Dinosaur’s Diary’ by Julia Donaldson to create vocabulary rich narratives and to explore descriptive writing.
During the second half term, pupils will learn about famous people and past events that have changed the world and the way we live today. This includes events such as the Great Fire of London, the first man on the moon and more recently Malala Yousafzai, a young girl who fought for an education!
During spring term, children live their lives as pirates during our, ‘Shiver Me Timbers!’ topic. This includes role playing the life of a pirate using our amazing pirate ship in our outdoor area. Children meet a real life pirate “Captain Dantastic” allowing them to embed their learning and ask any further questions they may have. This includes making comparisons with their lives and pirate’s lives in the past.
As the year draws to a close, we introduce children to, “Turrets and Tiaras’ where children are immersed in to a world of royalty! As well as learning about knights and the medieval period, children are taught about our royal family and how they serve the country as part of our British Values curriculum. Children will explore and focus Warwick Castle and what it would have been like to live and work there.
During the month of May, Year 2 will be sitting SAT tests. These are nothing to worry about, and are just there to support the class teacher’s judgements. Further information for this will be given out closer to the time, including parent meetings.
